Animal Ethics. Stories and Pictures

Stories and pictures, myths and symbols testify that man and animal are remarkably close. They were all in the same boat in Noah's Ark. People of all cultures are well aware that they have to respect animals, which has become a part of the code of conduct concerning animal ethics when it comes to religion. Numerous animal rights groups worldwide advocate rights for animals. We are becoming increasingly more sensitive in our relationships with animals. For exactly this reason, we will one day - not in the distant future, but rather during this century - look back on such animal cruelty and find it as incomprehensible as the times of slavery. Just as we have introduced human rights, we will also soon agree upon universal rights for animals and do everything in our power to see that they are protected. Thereafter, we will never be able to imagine the world without them again. The works published in this series intend to provide a method to critically evaluate our manner in interacting with animals as well as search for a new, ethically responsible approach in which we can interact with them. Although the works make their contributions in a simple yet appealing way, they are nonetheless challenging in that they do so through their use of imagery and story.

Texte und Bilder, Mythen und Symbole zeugen davon: Mensch und Tier sind einander bemerkenswert nahe. In Noahs Arche sitzen sie alle im selben Boot. In allen Kulturen ist den Menschen bewusst, dass mit Tieren nicht nach Belieben umgegangen werden darf. In den Religionen hat sich dies in tierethischen Verhaltensregeln niedergeschlagen. Unzählige Tierschutzorganisationen treten weltweit für die Rechte der Tiere ein. Zusehends werden wir sensibler in unserem Verhältnis zum Tier. Und deshalb werden wir eines Tages - nicht erst in ferner Zukunft, sondern noch in diesem Jahrhundert - so verständnislos auf tierquälerisches Verhalten zurückschauen wie auf die Zeit der Sklaverei. Und so wie wir die Menschenrechte eingeführt haben, so werden wir uns bald schon auf allgemeine Tierrechte verständigen und alles dafür tun, dass sie durchgesetzt werden. Und wir werden uns keine Welt mehr ohne sie vorstellen können. Die in dieser Buchreihe veröffentlichten Beiträge wollen auf eine leichte, vor allem durch Bilder und Geschichten ansprechende, deshalb aber nicht weniger anspruchsvolle Weise einen Beitrag leisten zur kritischen Überprüfung unseres Umgangs mit dem Tier und zur Suche nach neuen, ethisch verantwortbaren Formen des Umgangs mit ihm.
