It covers a period in Thomas Mann's writing career not included in the previous work. What did the young Thomas Mann think, how did he feel, about the presence of Jews in German society? One will find the answer to these questions in the short-stories "The Will for Happiness" (1896), "Gladius Dei" (1902), "Tristan" (1903), "The Blood of the Walsungs" (1905).
